Rambutan VS. Canned Rambutan -- how to eat this weird tropical fruit
What is rambutan fruit and how do you eat rambutan? Today CG and I are trying fresh rambutan and canned rambutan from a local Asian grocery. Rambutan is a super cool red and hairy looking tropical fruit that can be found in the USA at Asian and International groceries. Rambutan grows on trees, but looks like it might have fallen out of an space alien's lunch box. It's a bit of work to eat, because you must first remove the outer husk layer and then eat the sweet flesh from around a nutty pit, but rambutan IS sweet, and it's hard to eat just one. I paid around $2.29 lb. U.S. for rambutan. I found rambutan to be a bit pricey, but not as expensive as kiwano or dragon fruit; you can definitely buy a lot more banana with the same amount of cash.
Rambutan is grown year round. It does not continue to ripen after it is picked. Rambutan at the grocery is sometimes startlingly red, sometimes duller. The hairy legs and outer husk will darken as the fruit ages. It is often sold in bunches in plastic bags. You can store tropical rambuttan in a bag in the fridge and it will keep for a couple of weeks.
